We are organizing a doctoral-level literature seminar series designed to engage critically with key publications, connect with leading scholars, and explore emerging developments in the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework.
The series is designed for doctoral students interested in the foundations, evolution, and application of the CoI framework. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance, which may be transferable to a course, individual study, or professional development program—depending on institutional policies. Academic credit is available for Swedish doctoral students. If you are not a doctoral student (i.e. professor, researcher, practitioner) but are interested in deepening your understanding of the Community of Inquiry framework, you are still welcome to participate.
The seminar series covers six key themes:
- Introduction to the CoI Framework – Foundational concepts and components
- Foundational Papers – Seminal publications that established the CoI framework
- Establishing a Theoretical Framework – Methodologies, coding schemes, and surveys
- Emerging Challenges – Topics such as Nth presence, learner presence, emotional presence, and metacognition
- Historical Foundations – Philosophical and theoretical underpinnings
- Recent Publications – Current research and developments
Format
- Six online sessions (May–November 2025), 2 hours each.
- Accommodates multiple time zones: CEST, EDT, JST.
- Approx. 200 hours total workload including reading and participation.
Organized by Dr. Stefan Stenbom, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden).
Featuring guest scholars from the CoI research community, including: Dr. D. Randy Garrison, Dr. Jennifer C. Richardson, Dr. Marti Cleveland-Innes and others.
